The Centre for the Moving Image (CMI) reopens the doors on the Belmont Filmhouse in Aberdeen tomorrow, having taken over the lease and operating contract from the previous operators, Picturehouse, at the beginning of the week.

The CMI already owns and operates the Filmhouse cinema in Edinburgh and the Edinburgh International Film Festival. It also programmes cinema for The Brunton (Musselburgh), An Lanntair (Stornoway) and Heart of Hawick.

Ken Hay, CEO of CMI said; “We are delighted to be taking over the Belmont Filmhouse.  We’re inheriting a great venue in the heart of the city, with a fantastically committed team who have worked hard to make the Belmont a key part of Aberdeen’s cultural landscape.  We’ll be working with them and the loyal audience in developing the Belmont Filmhouse as the hub for film in Aberdeen and the North East – for everyone who loves film.

“I would like to thank Aberdeen City Council for selecting the CMI to run the Belmont, and thank both Aberdeen City Council and Creative Scotland for supporting the transition period.”

In the coming months the Belmont Filmhouse will host more festivals and special events, including Cinema of Childhood, McLaren 2014, Scotland Loves Anime, and also screenings as part of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

Over the past week the CMI has installed brand new state of the art digital projection equipment at the Belmont Filmhouse, ensuring the highest quality of presentation at the venue.

All the existing staff will continue to work at the Belmont Filmhouse, and all current Belmont Picturehouse Members will be able to switch to the Filmhouse Membership scheme.

The change has come about following a ruling by the Competition Commission that Cineworld’s acquisition of Picturehouse Cinemas in December 2012 had created unfair competition in Aberdeen as Cineworld already operated two of the other three cinemas in the city, as well as the Belmont.

The Belmont Filmhouse programme can be found, and tickets purchased online at www.belmontfilmhouse.com, at the Box Office and by phone on 01224 343500.
