Creating Scotland on Film

The eighteenth series of The Edinburgh Lectures presents and discusses Making Scotland.

The theme for 2009/10 is ‘Making Scotland’, focussing on “how physical, political, commercial, and cultural issues shape our country and its people and Scotland’s role on the global stage." In part, the theme ties into the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Scottish Parliament.

Ten leading organisations work in partnership to bring together the lectures and debates across our inspiring capital. The events take place through autumn and winter and are open to everyone. So why not get your tickets, sit back and enjoy these fascinating, thought provoking and emotive events.

Hannah McGill was born in Shetland in 1976, grew up in Lincolnshire, and studied English Literature and Film and Television Studies at the University of Glasgow. As a critic and columnist, she has contributed to numerous publications including The Scotsman, The Herald, The Times, Uncut, Time Out, Art Review, The Guardian and Sight and Sound. She is also a published writer of short fiction and drama. As a broadcaster she has contributed regularly to arts programmes on BBC Scotland, BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service. She has also lectured in Film Journalism at the University of Glasgow. She became Artistic Director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival in September 2006. In 2008 she was named in Variety's Women's Impact Report as one of 50 female 'movers and shakers' at all levels of entertainment.

EIFF ARTISTIC DIRECTOR HANNAH MCGILL WINS AWARD AT WOMEN IN FILM AND TELEVISION AWARDS

London, Friday 4 December 2009; At a ceremony today at the Park Lane Hilton Hotel in London Hannah McGill, Artistic Director of The Edinburgh International Film Festival won the talkback Thames New Talent Award.

McGill joined a glittering array of women recognised at the awards, presented by Jo Brand, including Dame Helen Mirren, actress Katie Jarvis and acclaimed writer Paula Milne.

The New Talent Award is given to an emerging talent who, in the last two years, has made a notable contribution in film, television or digital media.

Hannah McGill commented; “I am delighted to receive this award and feel very honoured to be part of such a great event that recognises the hard work of women in our industry.”

WFTV (Women in Film and Television) is the premier membership organisation for women working in the film, television, radio, animation and new media industries, with over 10,000 members worldwide. In addition to their annual Awards ceremony, WFTV promotes women in the industry all year round with a programme of master classes, screenings, lectures, pitching sessions, panel discussions and networking drinks. They organise industry events at Cannes and London Film Festivals, and run the only woman-to-woman mentoring scheme in the UK.
