We're releasing our first film as distributor tomorrow, and we're rather excited! Alexey Balabanov's The Stoker is a pitch black comedy drama set in post-Soviet Russia in the mid-1990s, about an ethnic Yakut, Major Skryabin, a shell-shocked veteran of the Afghan-Soviet War, who works as a stoker. Living in the boiler room, the Major shovels coal all day and fills his spare time writing a novel, whilst turning a blind eye to his former military comrade-turned-hitman, the Sergeant, who arrives to dispose of bodies in the furnace. But even our compliant stoker has his limits…

The film opens here at Filmhouse on Friday 17 May, and will screen at another ten (and counting!) venues around the country over the next few weeks. It's been getting great reviews too – four stars from Empire, Time Out and Little White Lies, and a two-page spread in Sight & Sound's films of the month section.

To celebrate the release we're giving three lucky winners a poster and two tickets to any screening of the film at Filmhouse. To enter the draw, email with the answer to the following question by noon on Friday 17 May.

Question: Near which Russian city is The Stoker set?
