I went to the Toronto Film Festival 2016 never having heard of Barry Jenkins’ chronicle of the childhood, adolescence and adulthood of a gay African-American man, but by the time I came home it was firmly established as most of my fellow delegates’ film of the festival. A character-driven work that manages at the same time to be entirely universal, it’s a lyrical slice of compassionate, insightful cinema.
