Shalom Bollywood - The Untold Story of Indian Cinema

Part of the Edinburgh Asian Film Festival Season

From Danny Ben-Moshe, one of the leading British documentary filmmakers comes a previously unknown tale of how Indian Jews played a formative role in shaping the world’s largest film industry.

When Indian cinema began 100 years ago, it was frowned upon for Hindu and Muslim women to perform on screen, so Indian Jewish women took on female lead roles and dominated this space for decades. The film reintroduces us to some of India’s greatest Jewish actors, like Sulochana, Pramila, the unforgettable Nadira and Bollywood’s favourite uncle, David. Infused with music and dance, Ben-Moshe’s engrossing documentary is a rare gem of a story celebrating interfaith coexistence which revisits a fascinating chapter in Indian film history.

by a Q&A with author J. David Simons, documentary filmmaker Sana Bilgrami, and playwright, radio/theatre director and producer David Ian Neville. Hosted by Selma Rahman, Esar Consultants.
