Opening flashbacks root the modern story of California Dreamin’ in WWII as we see an unexploded bomb bounce down the stairs of a Romanian apartment-block in a virtuoso shot.
The film then shifts to a regional Romanian town in 1999 where Doiaru the station manager refuses to allow a train carrying American soldiers and military equipment to pass through en route to Kosovo. The stand-off between an intractable Doiaru and the gruff army captain is the centrepiece to this sly musing on the ills of American intervention that includes along the way much comedy and even some romance between a young American and Doiaru’s daughter.
A sad postscript is that the 27-year-old director, Cristian Nemescu, and the sound designer, Andrei Toncu, died in a car crash while the film was in post-production.
