From his home base in New Jersey to Louisiana, Texas, Alaska and Florida, filmmaker John Sayles has crisscrossed the US weaving sprawling stories in such films as City of Hope, Passion Fish, Lone Star, Limbo and Sunshine State.
Unique among his peers, Sayles travels his own road, dramatising an Americana streaked with social realism and a touch of the magical. For Honeydripper, his 16th film as writer-director, he turns to the roots of rock 'n' roll for his subject and Alabama for his locale.
A musical fable, the film uses wonderful ensemble performances, crackling dialogue and a superb soundtrack to tell the story of a man facing a crossroads in the small town of Harmony. It's 1950, and it's a make-or-break weekend for Tyrone Purvis (Danny Glover), the proprietor of the Honeydripper Lounge. Deep in debt, Tyrone is desperate to bring back the crowds that used to come to his place. He decides to lay off his longtime blues singer Bertha Mae and announces that he has hired a famous guitar player, Guitar Sam, for a one-night-only gig in order to save the club. But when Tyrone's ace-in-the-hole fails to materialise at the train station, his desperation leads him to a young drifter with a guitar case.
Please note: Contains one scene of moderate violence and mild language
