SPECIAL EVENT
Frantisek Vlácil's 13th century-set medieval epic, based on a novel by avant-garde writer Vladislav Vancura, is a high point of sixties Czech cinema and every bit as impressive and poetic as Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev.
The story concerns the rivalry between two clans, the Kozliks and the Lazars, and the doomed love affair between Mikolás Kozlik and Marketa Lazarová. Interwoven within this tale is the brutal conflict of the time between Christian and pagan customs, set against the harsh backdrop of an untamed natural world.
Throughout the film Vlácil draws upon his knowledge of remote historical sources to recreate an authentic primitive world, which nevertheless retains a contemporary resonance.
The screening will be introduced by Jan Culik, senior lecturer in Czech studies at Glasgow University.
