Melville's great achievement with this film is his relocation of the American gangster film to France, while incorporating his own steely poetic and philosophical obsessions. He described this, his penultimate film, as a digest of the (by his reckoning) nineteen different underworld set-ups that could be found in John Huston's 1950 film The Asphalt Jungle. Darker and more abstract than his earlier work, The Red Circle shows the breakdown of the criminal 'codes' under which Melville's characters had previously operated, as Corey (Alain Delon) navigates the treacherous underworld to plan a jewellery heist...

The Wed 27 Sep screening at 8.20pm will be introduced by Dr Pasquale Iannone (University of Edinburgh).
