Supported by the UK Space Agency and in partnership with the Royal Observatory Edinburgh, Filmhouse embarks on eight days of screenings to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission.

Taking place from Tue 16 to Wed 24 July 2019, 8 Days in Space will host a packed programme of space-themed films for audiences of all ages. The season will feature the pioneers, the unsung heroes and complex characters and the hopes and fears of mankind’s greatest ambition. A number of linked discussion events and Q&As will also go into orbit, with researchers and speakers from the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Astronomy, the Royal Observatory Edinburgh and associated ambassadors.

The season is part of a wider project initiated by Scotland’s leading independent cinema siblings – Filmhouse, Edinburgh and Belmont Filmhouse, Aberdeen. 8 Days in Space highlights the influence of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects on cinema and the film industry, allowing audiences the opportunity to learn more about the solar system and the world they live in, and the achievements of the UK Space Agency and scientists based in Edinburgh.

8 Days in Space boasts a number of highlights, including a screening of APOLLO 11 where audiences will see the Apollo Lunar Module landing on the moon, 50 years to the exact moment that the landing occurred. Matjaz Vidmar will give an introduction and countdown to our specially timed screening.

Long-time Filmhouse collaborators S!nk will work with The Reverse Engineer to provide musical accompaniment to Holger-Madsen’s Silent classic A TRIP TO MARS (1918). The cinema’s Education team will also follow-up the season in September with a number of screenings for Primary and Secondary School pupils, including HIDDEN FIGURES and IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON.

The season is supported by the UK Space Agency, with selected screenings hosted by volunteers from the Royal Observatory Edinburgh and a galaxy of science educators from across the city.

8 Days In Space, supported by the UK Space Agency, runs at Filmhouse from Tuesday 16 July to Wednesday 24 July 2019. Screening times and tickets can be found here or by calling 0131 228 2688.
