This project is led by CMI’s Board and Senior Management Team, with support from property consultancy Montagu Evans.  

Due to the significance of this project to Filmhouse and to Edinburgh, we intend to consult as widely as possible on this proposal.  This consultation stage will officially run for 12 weeks from 11th March to 3rd June 2020. 

And we’re looking for input from you, from our customers, our partners and stakeholders, and from the people of Edinburgh; to gauge support for our plans and further develop the designs before submitting a formal Planning Application to the City of Edinburgh Council during the summer. It is at that point that people will be able to comment directly to the City of Edinburgh Council as part of the formal process. 

This indicative timeline below is entirely dependent on the achieving a positive Planning Application decision and securing the necessary funds to commence construction.  

The existing building has a number of challenges and we will decide on how sustain the medium term operation of Filmhouse’s activities once we have a decision on the Planning Application. 

Indicative timeline: 

  • Pre-Application Consultation: 11th March – 3rd June 2020 

  • Planning Application submitted: July 2020 

  • Planning Application decision: Anticipated by February 2021 

  • Fundraising Campaign: Launches 2021 

  • Building work:  Aiming to commence in summer 2023 

  • New Filmhouse opens: Aiming for late 2025
