COVID-19 Safety Measures

We’ve been hard at work making some changes to ensure your safety, and the safety of our staff. Our staff have been trained on the new measures in place and will be in on hand to help you if you have any questions or specific access requirements.

You will be able to select any seat in the auditorium and our reservation system will automatically ensure there is at least one seat (about 1m) between you and other customers on your row.

Scottish Government regulations continue to require everyone to wear a face covering whilst in the cinemas and moving around the building. You can remove your face covering if eating and drinking. Please observe these rules to avoid putting our team in a difficult position.

1m social distancing also applies in our café bar space. We will provide table service only, and booking is recommended, however we can usually accommodate walk ups.

We continue to approach all our decisions with the wellbeing of our staff, Cafe Bar customers and cinema audiences front of mind and we really appreciate your continued support of our safety measures.

To stay up to date with the current restrictions and guidance for your area in line with the Scottish Government framework, please refer to the Coronavirus postcode checker. Check the travel guidance to find out what travel restrictions currently apply.

  • We would encourage you to take a lateral flow test at home, prior to attending any events at Filmhouse. Please only continue your plans to attend if your test returns a negative result.

  • On arrival at the cinema you’ll be required to check in at the front door and to provide details for Test and Protect.

  • When in the cinema screens, when on your feet and any time you aren’t sitting and consuming food or drink you are required to wear a face mask, unless medically exempt. This is to provide protection for you, our staff and fellow audiences.

  • Where possible we request that you book online and use contactless card payment to minimise interaction with Filmhouse staff. We also recommend, due to reduced capacity, that you book in advance to avoid disappointment. Don’t hesitate to call us on 0131 228 2688 if you’re having any issues.

  • On arrival at the cinema our staff will show our one way system and sanitiser stations, and you’ll notice clear marking and signage throughout our building.

  • Our staff will continue to regularly clean all surfaces throughout the day.

  • All our staff will be knowledgeable about the most up to date Government legislation around Covid-19 and cinemas, and of our own risk assessment, and will be happy to advise if you have any questions.

  • Please note that many of our staff members have not yet had their vaccinations. Please be considerate of this and continue social distancing when you move around the building.

We hope you’ll find that we have applied the most rigorous attention to safety legislation, and that this allows you to feel relaxed and comfortable – and welcome back!

From Friday 26th August we will increase the capacity in our cinemas to a maximum of 50% which will give our customers some more flexibility in selecting their ideal seat. You will be able to select any seat in the auditorium and our reservation system will automatically ensure there is at least one seat (about 1m) between you and other customers on your row. If you need help booking, our box office staff will be able to help on calling 0131 228 2688 or emailing

On booking you’ll receive a confirmation email which includes an arrival time.  The arrival time is designed to minimise any queuing or crowding in our cinemas, so you should only arrive at or after the time shown (unless you have a separate booking for the café bar).
