In her 40s Letizia Battaglia escaped her stuffy lifestyle to follow her passion as a photojournalist. She took a job at a Palermo-based newspaper where she became the first female photographer for a daily paper in Italy. Expecting to take pictures of the ordinary, she soon found herself documenting the life and crimes of the Mafia in Palermo. Combining rare archival film, and conversations with Letizia herself, Shooting the Mafia is an affecting and inspiring account of a defiant woman who is willing to risk everything to tell the true story of the city she loves.
The screening at 3.00pm on Sun 1 Dec will be followed by a discussion with Niamh Fagan (producer) and Pasquale Iannone (Director, Italian Film Festival Scotland) and hosted by Mia Bays, Director-At-Large of Birds' Eye View and Oscar-winning producer.
