Part of the Africa in Motion Season
On the outskirts of the capital of Chad, determined and devoted single mother Amina works tirelessly to provide for herself and her 15-year-old daughter Maria. When Amina discovers Maria is pregnant and does not want to keep the child, the two women seek an abortion despite it being condemned by both religion and law. A stunning vision of female solidarity, Lingui: The Sacred Bonds is a bracing, fearless and affecting portrait of community and sisterhood in a world dominated and run so heavily in favour of men.
There will be a post-screening discussion with African & Caribbean Elders in Scotland and KWISA (Women’s Association).
Introduction by Liz Chege (Africa in Motion Festival Director)
Discussion Host: Dr Chisomo Kalinga (Chancellor's Fellow in Social Anthropology, Medical Humanities, University of Edinburgh)
Discussion Guests: Florence Menzies (Afro-Caribbean Elder’s Association) and Esther Kamonji (KWISA)
All tickets are FREE.
