Jessie Buckley, Rory Kinnear
After a personal tragedy, Harper (Jessie Buckley) retreats alone to the perfect country house rental in the beautiful English countryside in order to heal. There’s something a little odd about Geoffrey (Rory Kinnear) the ‘host’ who’s there to welcome her, but perhaps that’s just what posh folks are like in the country. But, as she takes her first walk in the nearby woods, someone, or something, seems to be stalking her, and, slowly, a simmering dread turns into a fully formed nightmare, one inhabited by her own dark fears… If this is a horror film (which, I guess, it is), it’s a hugely stylish, tense, cerebral, satirical and creepy one in a manner in which the genre is only rarely blessed. Beautiful to look at and immensely atmospheric (you can practically feel those cold, damp, dripping, mossy woods) and thematically not a million miles away from Garland’s own 2014 sci-fi chiller, Ex Machina, it also features two fabulous actors at the top of their game and will leave you wanting to discuss it for weeks!
